Any organization head will tell you leading a major entity isn't just a nine-to-five job.

Incoming Women's Tennis Association (WTA) chair Valerie Camillo is familiar with working around the clock from past positions - notably in a strategic role of the entertainment company which runs American celebrated artist Dolly Parton's tourist attractions.

Beyond her contributions into Parton's portfolio, Camillo takes over the helm at women's tennis bringing extensive background throughout athletics and show business, with past roles in key executive jobs at the National Basketball Association (NBA), the premier ice hockey competition and Major League Baseball (MLB).

Camillo will begin her leadership position at the WTA in the coming weeks, succeeding the outgoing Steve Simon, who led for a decade is ending as he steps down.

As Camillo begins her new role on 17 November, she will inherit responsibility regarding major challenges left by the former leader.

Simon drew praise recently for what was widely seen as a courageous moral stance in suspending WTA events throughout the Asian nation.

It was a response following issues surrounding Chinese player Peng Shuai, who disappeared publicly for an extended period post claims a senior government figure of inappropriate behavior.

However the economic impact from this move were significant.

Leadership changed direction after the principled stand recently and resumed operations to the Chinese market, subsequently looking to address the deficit through selecting cash-rich Saudi Arabia to host for the tour finale.

The move to a region regarding gender equality faced limitations sparked debate, and during the tournament returning to the Gulf soon Middle Eastern participation faces examination.

The tour signed a three-year deal with Saudi Arabia - offering historic payouts setting new standards for the current season - showing Camillo must guide negotiations of what happens in coming years.

Middle Eastern funding further offers substantial assistance to the WTA's commitment ensuring equal compensation at all combined Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and WTA events in the near future and additional significant competitions in coming years.

The possibility of the WTA merging business interests together with ATP remains under consideration, with the two governing bodies seemingly understanding the need for greater alignment regarding media, data and sponsorship deals.

The current fragmented landscape frequently results in fans and investors confused and disillusioned.

Significantly, the leadership for both tours was challenged through legal action from the players' union, which has criticised the tours overlooking competitor needs.

The WTA knows the obvious advantage of partnering with the richer ATP, yet the new chair aims to avoid the WTA losing influence during important talks and marketing opportunities consequently.

Addressing worries regarding calendar and player burnout remains a key focus area.

With her role meaning she leads both competitors and competitions, it will be essential to address the concerns from all sides and strike a balance increasing income and the health of the stars producing those earnings.

The previous leader stepped down as chief executive and chairman last year - which followed multiple major winner Martina Navratilova pushing for transformation - and the leadership change concludes with installing fresh leadership.

Her understanding regarding business complexity across premier competitions - notably approaches to audience expansion and attract investment via creativity - regarded as a key reason for choosing her.

Joining women's tennis coincides with "a moment of accelerated growth and opportunity", says the WTA.

The time is now in female athletics. Revenue generated in women's competitions recently exceeded one billion dollars and business analysts forecast achieving $2.5bn (£1.8bn) within six years.

The new leader's goal involves securing the WTA and its leading stars - including Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek - secure substantial portion of the pie.

"The tour features the biggest women's sports stars globally and hold advantageous standing in women's sports," leadership commented.

"Throughout female athletics, investment, audiences and media engagement are increasing exponentially.

"Typically the challenge for women's sports is building awareness, drawing supporters and viewership," added Camillo.

"The WTA faces distinct circumstances - having established legacy, we have an incredible legacy, extensive international reach, and among the most recognized, top-compensated female athletes globally."
