My Name Is Man Utd: This Superfan Who Struggled to Change His Legal Name

Inquire of any Manchester United devotee of a certain age concerning the importance of that fateful day in May 1999, and they will tell you that the date changed them forever. It was the moment when last-minute strikes from Sheringham and Solskjær completed an stunning come-from-behind victory in the European Cup final against Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou. It was also, the existence of one loyal follower in Eastern Europe, who has died at the 62 years old, took a new direction.

Aspirations Under Communism

The fan in question was originally called Marin Levidzhov in his hometown, a settlement with a population of 22,000. Growing up in a socialist state with a passion for football, he longed to legally altering his identity to… the Red Devils. However, to adopt the name of a organization from the Western world was an unattainable goal. Any effort to do so during the socialist era, he would undoubtedly have been arrested.

A Vow Made Under Pressure

Many seasons after the fall of the regime in Bulgaria – on the historic evening – Marin's unique aspiration moved nearer to fulfillment. Tuning in from home from his simple residence in Svishtov and with the score against them, Marin swore an oath to himself: should his team mount a comeback, he would spare no effort to become known as that of the team he adored. Then, against all odds, it transpired.

A Protracted Court Struggle

The next day, Marin consulted an attorney to state his extraordinary desire, thus initiating a difficult fight. Marin’s father, from whom he had inherited his love of United, was no longer alive, and the man in his thirties was caring for his parent, employed in miscellaneous roles, including as a laborer on £15 a day. He was barely getting by, yet his dream became an obsession. He soon became the subject of gossip, then became an international sensation, but 15 years full of judicial disputes and disheartening court decisions awaited him.

Trademark Issues and Limited Success

Marin’s wish was turned down at first for copyright reasons: he was not permitted to adopt the name of a internationally recognized entity. Then a presiding magistrate granted a limited approval, saying Marin could modify his forename to Manchester but that he was prohibited from using United as his family name. “But I don’t want to be identified with an urban area in the UK, I want to wear the name of my favourite football club,” Marin told the court. The battle persisted.

His Beloved Cats

When not in court, he was often caring for his feline friends. He had many animals in his back yard in Svishtov and loved them as much as the Manchester United. He named them all after team stars: including Ferdinand and Rooney, they were the most famous cats in town. Who was his preferred pet of Man U? A kitty called Beckham.

Progress and Integrity

Another victory was secured in court: he was allowed to add United as an official nickname on his ID card. But he remained dissatisfied. “I won’t stop until my full name is the club's title,” he promised. His narrative resulted in business offers – an offer to have supporters' goods produced under his new name – but despite his financial struggles, he declined the proposal because he did not want to profit from his adored institution. The team's title was sacred to him.

Aspirations Fulfilled and Final Acts

A documentary followed in that year. The production team fulfilled his wish of seeing the iconic stadium and there he even had the chance to see the Bulgarian striker, the forward on the team's roster at the time.

Permanently marked the team emblem on his forehead three years later as a protest against the court decisions and in his final years it became more and more difficult for him to continue his legal battle. Work was limited and he was bereaved to Covid-19. But against the odds, he persevered. Originally of Catholic faith, he got baptised in an Eastern Orthodox church under the name Manchester United Zdravkov Levidzhov. “Ultimately, my true name is recognized with my real name,” he often stated.

Earlier this week, his time ran out. Perhaps now Manchester United’s restless soul could achieve eternal tranquility.
